Going the extra mile – how to attract the best talent

‘Is it a nice place to work?’

A question we’ve been asked more than ever of late.

Work/life balance, respectful bosses, inspiring leadership, recognised hard work, no blame culture… All things that candidates we speak to on a daily basis are beginning to prioritise when applying for a role through us.

And why shouldn’t they? Working in TV is demanding enough, you don’t need the pressure that your boss is going to come down on you like a ton of bricks if you slip up, or if need to work flexibly when your child is sick.

The top 10 companies in the Broadcast ‘Best Places to Work in TV’ 2020 all cite various perks to keep staff happy, from free yoga classes to bonuses, staff away days abroad to rental deposit advances. And who would be upset with an all expenses paid ski-trip to Chamonix?! (One place is genuinely taking the whole company…)

In fact, we’ve found that the market is so competitive these days, that it’s often now the freelancers in the driving seat. Companies can fight over the same people, who seemingly have pick of the work. So it’s not always purely about the project they’re considering – it’s even more important that a workplace’s reputation is not only good, but outstanding. And somewhere that is creative whilst welcoming and nurturing talented (and equally nice) people.

One misconception is that if you’re nice, you can’t have authority, you’re a walkover. In our opinion, this is an old fashioned and outdated stance. Some of the best and most senior people we know in the industry are so inspiring, as well as demanding, that that they make you want to play your A game. And in fact, work even harder to win their respect…

And that creates an environment that wins every time.
